Café Touba is a traditional, spiced coffee from Senegal, named after the city of Touba, known for its bold, aromatic flavor from added spices like Guinea pepper (grains of paradise) and cloves, often with a smoky undertone from roasting. It's a cultural icon, historically linked to the Mouride (pronounced "MOOR-eed") Sufi Order founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, and is prepared by grinding roasted coffee beans with spices and brewing it, sometimes with condensed milk, and can be served hot or iced.

Key Health and Medicinal Benefits

  • Anti-parasitic Potential: Research indicates that compounds in the Guinea pepper possess antiplasmodial effects, which may assist in resisting parasites.
  • Energy Boost: The high-caffeine Robusta beans provide a strong, stimulating, and, according to some, a non-anxious "buzz" that aids in focus.
  • Antioxidant Source: The combination of coffee and spices provides high levels of antioxidants.
  • Respiratory Relief: Known to help with coughs, colds, flu, and asthma.
  • Digestive Support: Used to settle the stomach, aid digestion, and alleviate discomfort.
  • Medicinal Properties:

The Guinea pepper acts as an antiseptic and is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.
